Jerry Ragan received a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction from the University of Virginia and his law degree from the Marshall Whythe School of Law at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He began his legal career in Huntington, West Virginia, representing doctors and hospitals in medical malpractice cases. He moved to North Carolina in 1986 and began representing injured people in traffic accident and medical malpractice cases.

Jerry and his wife Daria, a Presbyterian minister, live in Belmont. They have four grown children and six grandchildren.
